Friday 25th September

Friday 25 Sep 2015

This week the children have enjoyed retelling the story of 'why dog lives with man'.  Why not ask your child to retell it to you, using actions?  We will continue work on this story next week, building up to the children creating their own versions.   In numeracy we have been discussing the use of the equals sign and its function in number sentences.  We talked about see saws needing the same on both sides to balance.  The children have used their knowledge of numbers bonds of 10 and 20 to find the missing numbers in number sentences.  On a similar theme, the children were challenged to make a model dinosaur out of modelling clay.  The aim was to ensure their dinosaur could stand up/balance.  In learning for life we have been discussing what makes a good friend. The children came up with characteristics such as: sharing, listening, caring, taking turns, being fair, being funny and being kind.  In art we have continued to make clay dinosaurs and we have also been outside to make a dinosaur collage with autumn leaves.

Today your child should have come home with a small green spelling book.   Inside is a note for your information and a list of tricky words we would like your child to learn.  Spellings will be tested every Friday morning and new ones sent home.  If your child spells a word correctly, we will highlight it in their green book for your information.  Any incorrectly spelt words will be left blank and we would be grateful if you could revisit them.  Also today, your child has had a list of the new National Curriculum high frequency words stuck into the back of their reading record book.  These are for reading purposes only and not for spelling.  As with the spellings, your child will be tested by an adult in school and any words read on sight will be highlighted.  An additional list will be added once all words have been highlighted.

Next week we will start baking sessions with the children.  Please ensure your child is not wearing nail polish! In maths we will be starting a unit of work on 'money'.  Any coin counting activities or coin recognition you could do at home would be helpful.  Also finding change is a concept that many children find difficult.  Why not set up a shop?
