It really is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of our first term. It has been wonderful to meet with you all over the past week or so and talk about the progress your children are making and how well they have settled in to the routines of Year 2.
As Christmas is approaching our classrooms have been decorated and we are starting to rehearse for our nativities on the afternoons of the 14th and 15th of December. All children should now know their lines and now need to focus on projecting their voices so that they can be heard. Please could costumes be sent in to school next week in a named bag. Your child should have come home with a slip about costume requirements. Any queries please don't hesitate to ask. We are still working hard and are trying to avoid disrupting the curriculum too much ;-)
In Maths this week we have been looking at position and direction, using language such as left and right, forwards and backwards, clockwise and anti-clockwise. We went outside to practise turning on a giant clock and had a great game of Simon Says. Next week we will be moving on to co-ordinates and then on to addition and subtraction.
In Literacy we have started a new book ' The princess and the white bear King' . The children have written some fantastic descriptions of crowns with a focus on using powerful adjectives and similes. They have also written great descriptions of the castle in which the story is set. Children have been hot seating and have been interviewed in the role of characters from the story. They were brilliant and showed through their answers that they really had understood the text read and that they understood how the characters would be feeling.
In Science the children have had a one off week looking at the moon as it is spectacular at the moment - the children have been given a little homework sheet to do related to this.
In L4L we have been looking at values and specifically 'British Values' , the children discussed their understanding of the various values and talked of their importance in society.
We have now started our new topic on Antarctica which is specifically looking at continents and oceans of the world. We have been studying globes and locating the different continents and the major oceans of the world.
Maths Whizz is going well and nearly all children are averaging thirty plus minutes. Spellings are continuing to be sent home and of course reading at home is still a must
Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!
